Struck as a pattern in 1906 to coincide with Romania's General Exposition in Bucharest, which celebrated forty years of Carol I's reign over the country. The exposition was a deliberate exercise in national projection, and the coin issues associated with it — patterns included — were produced with that ceremonial weight in mind rather than any circulation intent.
KM#Pn149 in bronze almost certainly represents a trial of a denomination that saw its regular issue struck in gold. Bronze pattern strikes of this type were standard practice at the Bucharest mint for testing dies before committing to precious metal production runs.
