Reverse description Bare-headed effigy of the mature, bearded Carol I, depicted as King (Rege) of Romania, facing left, rendered with fine naturalistic detail in the full beard and receding hair characteristic of his later portraiture. The engraver's initials A.M. appear at the base of the truncation. The circumferential legend CAROL I REGE AL ROMANIEI arcs around the upper field, flanked at the lower rim by two small five-pointed stars, with the regnal date range 1866-1906 inscribed across the lower field commemorating forty years of Carol I's rule.
