| Obverse description | Bare-headed effigy of King Carol II facing right, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and strong facial features in a naturalistic portrait style. The legend CAROL II REGELE ROMANILOR curves along the upper periphery, reading from left to right. The engraver's signature E.W.BECKER appears incuse below the truncation of the bust. Issued to mark one hundred years since Carol I's birth in 1839, this coin appeared in the same year Romania was nervously watching German expansion westward — Carol II authorized the commemorative while simultaneously pursuing a futile policy of neutrality that would collapse within months. The mintage was small and distribution largely ceremonial, keeping circulated survivors rare.
Carol I himself had established Romania's gold standard in 1867, making a gold commemorative of his centenary something of a pointed dynastic statement by his deeply unpopular grandson.
