| Obverse description | The coat of arms of the Republic of Moldova occupies the central field, depicting an eagle displayed holding an olive branch in its right talon and a sceptre in its left, with a shield on its breast charged with the traditional Moldavian aurochs head, a star, a crescent, and a rose. The date 2000 appears in the upper field above the arms, flanked by two small lozenges. The circular legend REPUBLICA · MOLDOVA arcs around the upper periphery, while the denomination 100 LEI is rendered in large characters in the lower field beneath the arms. |

The Battle of Vaslui, fought in January 1475, saw Moldavian prince Ștefan cel Mare defeat a substantially larger Ottoman force under Hadâmbey — one of the most decisive Christian military victories against the Ottoman Empire in the fifteenth century. Pope Sixtus IV reportedly called Ștefan "Athleta Christi" in response. Moldova issued this coin a full 525 years after the battle, during a period of post-Soviet nation-building when Ștefan's campaigns were central to the new state's historical identity.
