The Academy of High Commercial and Industrial Studies — known by its Romanian acronym AСIE — was founded in Bucharest in 1913, making 2013 its centenary year and the direct occasion for this issue. Established under the patronage of the Romanian state as the country's first dedicated higher education institution for economics, it evolved into what is today the Bucharest University of Economic Studies, one of the largest economics faculties in Eastern Europe.
