Chișinău's first documented mention appears in a 1436 Moldavian princely charter, a land deed referencing a mill on the Bâc River — making 2011 the 575th anniversary of that record. The medieval Principality of Moldova from which that document originates bore no political relation to the post-Soviet republic that issued this coin, a distinction the National Bank quietly sidesteps by anchoring civic identity to the oldest available written source rather than any modern founding event.
