| Obverse description | Right-facing bust of Michael the Brave (Mihai Viteazul), the 16th-century Wallachian prince who briefly unified the Romanian principalities, rendered in high relief with detailed armor and feathered helmet. The legend MIHAI VITEAZUL arcs along the upper periphery, with ROMANIA along the lower periphery. The engraver's initials V.G. appear below the truncation. Two distinct obverse varieties exist: Obverse A (1991–1992) features a smaller portrait with a rectangle visible in the plume of the helmet, while Obverse B (1992–1996) presents a larger portrait with no rectangle in the plume. |
