This is not a note printed in 1880 — it is a wartime stopgap. The Romanian National Bank, unable to commission new designs amid the chaos of the final months of World War II, authorized an overprint on existing 100 Lei stock, recycling a plate design that Bramtot and Duval had originally created decades earlier. The "1880 Provisional Issue" designation reflects the original artwork's vintage, not a reissue of an 1880 note.
Dujardin's engraving work, done for the French printing trade, found itself still in service some sixty-five years after the plates were first cut.
