Ioan Dragalina commanded Romanian forces during the brutal fighting at the Jiu Valley in September 1916, one of the few early defensive successes Romania managed after entering the First World War. Wounded in that action, he refused evacuation and continued directing operations until a second wound forced his removal from the front. He died in November 1916 from complications of those injuries, never learning how badly the broader campaign would collapse — Bucharest fell to German and Austro-Hungarian forces within weeks of his death.
