The Union Bank of Burma was established in 1952 as the country's central bank following the transition from the Currency Board system that had operated under British colonial administration. This 100 Kyats issue came at a politically turbulent moment — the civilian government of U Nu had just handed power to General Ne Win's caretaker military administration in late 1958, a period of instability that preceded the full military coup of 1962.
Thomas De La Rue had been printing Burmese currency since the earliest post-independence issues, a relationship that persisted until domestic printing capacity was eventually developed. The P#51 series was replaced relatively quickly, limiting its circulation window.
