Angola's early 1990s notes were issued under severe economic stress — annual inflation had already exceeded 300% by 1991, and the kwanza was losing purchasing power faster than new notes could reach circulation. The 100 Kwanza denomination, meaningful at introduction in 1977, was effectively petty cash by the time this issue appeared.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement continued a relationship with the Banco Nacional that stretched back through multiple series, though the political chaos of the civil war period made orderly distribution genuinely difficult in large parts of the country.
