Zambia's wildlife coinage of the late 1990s was produced largely for the collector market rather than domestic circulation, with many issues struck by the British Royal Mint or contracted European mints and distributed through numismatic dealers. The rhinoceros type belongs to a broader series that the Bank of Zambia used as a foreign exchange vehicle during a period of acute economic strain — the kwacha had lost the vast majority of its value through the late 1980s and 1990s, making commemorative issues denominated in local currency but sold abroad one of the few reliable hard-currency earners available to the issuing authority.
