Zambia's kwacha suffered chronic devaluation through the 1990s following the collapse of copper prices — the country's primary export — and the structural adjustment programs imposed by the IMF. By 1998, a 100-kwacha coin represented a denomination that had been steadily hollowed out by inflation, and within a few years the entire coinage system would require redenomination. The crocodile series from this period circulated briefly before becoming effectively worthless in everyday transactions.
