Abdülhamid II came to power in August 1876 under extraordinary duress — the empire had just defaulted on its foreign debt, two sultans had been deposed within three months, and the new constitution was already under threat. The gold issues from his first regnal years, bearing the accession date of 1293 AH, were struck at the Constantinople mint during a fiscal crisis that would eventually force the Ottoman government into the Muharrem Decree of 1881, surrendering control of imperial revenues to European creditors.
