Croatia formally acceded to the European Union on 1 July 2013, becoming the bloc's 28th member state — and the second former Yugoslav republic to join, after Slovenia in 2004. The accession concluded negotiations that had opened in 2005 and survived considerable turbulence, including a prolonged border dispute with Slovenia that briefly froze the entire process in 2008 and 2009.
The kuna itself would not survive EU membership indefinitely; Croatia adopted the euro on 1 January 2023, retiring the currency this coin was struck to celebrate.
