The kuna had a fraught re-introduction in 1994 — the name itself was politically charged, having been used by the Nazi-aligned Independent State of Croatia during WWII, and its revival drew sharp international criticism before cooling into acceptance. This 100 kuna denomination, issued across the 2002 and 2012 dates, was produced by two separate printing houses: Giesecke & Devrient in Leipzig and Oesterreichische Banknoten- und Sicherheitsdruck in Vienna, a dual-sourcing arrangement Croatia maintained throughout much of its kuna series to reduce dependency on any single security printer.
Both signature dates belong to Boris Vujčić, who has served as HNB governor since 2000 — unusually long tenure for a central bank chief, spanning Croatia's entire pre-euro period. The kuna was ultimately replaced by the euro on 1 January 2023.
