Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents a detailed architectural view of the ruined church of S:t Nicolaus in Visby, Gotland, rendered with fine linear engraving that conveys the partially collapsed walls, Romanesque arched doorways, and rose windows of the medieval structure. The composition fills the central field with the crumbling facade and standing gable ends, evoking the historic character of the ruin. The legend VISBY 1981 curves along the upper portion of the field in raised Latin lettering, while S:T NICOLAUS RUIN is inscribed along the lower arc, framing the architectural motif.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued to mark the 700th anniversary of the medieval fortification walls surrounding Visby on Gotland, this coin commemorates one of the best-preserved city walls in northern Europe — a structure that survived largely because Gotland's strategic importance collapsed after the Hanseatic League's decline left the island economically marginal. The walls that would otherwise have been quarried for building material simply had no one wealthy enough to bother.
