Gerhard Heilmann was primarily known as an ornithologist — his 1926 work on the origin of birds remains a landmark in paleontology — which makes his role designing this series something of an aside in his own biography. Nationalbanken commissioned him in the early twentieth century as part of a broader effort to move Danish currency toward a more coherent aesthetic, and the resulting type held through nearly two decades of issue.
Notes from the earlier dates in this window circulated through the disruptions of the First World War, when Denmark's neutral status created unusual cross-border currency pressures with both Germany and Britain.
