Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani — commonly abbreviated SNSK — operated as the effective civil authority in Longyearbyen under Norwegian sovereignty, and its company scrip functioned as the only practical currency in the settlement. Workers were paid partly in this scrip, which could be spent only at company-owned facilities: the store, the canteen, the cinema. It was a closed economy by design, not circumstance.

The SN55r suffix denotes a remainder — unissued notes returned from the settlement. Remainders from this series surface more often than genuinely circulated examples, which tend to show hard creasing from the arctic working conditions.
