100 Korun Samo Chalúpka

Samo Chalúpka (1812–1883) was a Slovak Romantic poet and Lutheran pastor whose verse became embedded in Slovak national consciousness during a period when the Hungarian authorities were actively suppressing Slovak language and culture. This coin was issued to mark the centenary of his death. Chalúpka's most celebrated poem, Mor ho! — roughly "Strike him dead!" — was a direct allegory of Slovak resistance to Magyar assimilation, using an ancient Roman encounter as cover for a very pointed contemporary message.
