Issued to mark the centenary of Prague's National Theatre, this coin commemorates one of the more dramatic stories in Czech cultural history. The original theatre, funded almost entirely by public subscription over decades, burned down just weeks after its 1881 opening — before most Czechs had ever seen a performance inside it. A second public fundraising drive rebuilt it within two years. The 1983 issue came under Czechoslovak normalization-era policy, when such commemoratives served the state's appetite for hard currency export rather than domestic circulation.
