Issued in the final months before Czechoslovakia's dissolution, this commemorative marks the fiftieth anniversary of the 1942 Nazi destruction of Lidice and Ležáky — two villages obliterated in reprisal for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich by SOE-trained paratroopers. Lidice was razed to the ground, its men shot, women deported to Ravensbrück, and children largely gassed at Chełmno. Ležáky, smaller, was similarly annihilated.
It was among the last commemoratives struck under the Czechoslovak state authority before the peaceful split of January 1993.
