Issued to mark the 600th anniversary of Charles IV's death, this coin honors a ruler who remains one of the most consequential medieval monarchs in Central European history — he founded Prague's Charles University in 1348, the first university in Central Europe, and his Golden Bull of 1356 reorganized the constitutional structure of the Holy Roman Empire for over four centuries. The 1978 issue is notable for appearing under a Czechoslovak communist government that was, at least nominally, rehabilitating certain pre-Habsburg Bohemian historical figures as politically acceptable national symbols.
