Issued to mark the centenary of Marx's death, this coin appeared at a moment when Czechoslovakia's Communist Party leadership was navigating the ideological tension between Soviet orthodoxy and the suppressed memory of the 1968 Prague Spring reforms. An official celebration of Marx was, in that climate, also an implicit reaffirmation of loyalty to Moscow.
