Additional information

Issued to mark the centenary of Marx's death, this coin appeared at a moment when Czechoslovakia's Communist Party leadership was navigating the ideological tension between Soviet orthodoxy and the suppressed memory of the 1968 Prague Spring reforms. An official celebration of Marx was, in that climate, also an implicit reaffirmation of loyalty to Moscow. The .500 fineness puts it firmly in the category of commemorative silver produced for collector export rather than genuine circulation — Czechoslovakia's Tuzex foreign-currency shops were the more likely destination than any workers' pocket.
