Issued to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the mining privileges granted to Jihlava (Iglau) by Wenceslaus I in 1249, this coin marks one of the most economically consequential royal decrees in Bohemian history. Jihlava's silver mines made it among the wealthiest towns in Central Europe during the 13th century, and its mining code — the Ius regale montanorum — was subsequently adopted by mining communities across Silesia, Hungary, and Poland.
The 1249 charter effectively created a legal framework that outlasted the mines themselves by centuries.
