The date commemorated here is the Nazi closure of Czech universities on November 17, 1939, triggered by student protests following the death of Jan Opletal — a medical student shot during demonstrations on October 28th. Nine student leaders were executed without trial, over 1,200 students were deported to concentration camps, and all Czech institutions of higher education were shuttered for the duration of the occupation. The date was later adopted internationally as World Students' Day.
This coin was struck in 1989, the same year the communist government it was issued under collapsed in the Velvet Revolution — November 17th, of all dates, marking its beginning.
