Martinů spent most of his adult life in exile — first Paris, then the United States after the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia — and died in Switzerland in 1959 without ever returning home. The communist government had little use for him; his music was considered too cosmopolitan. This commemorative, issued in the final weeks before the Velvet Revolution reshaped the country entirely, arrived just in time to mark his centenary under the regime that had effectively erased him.
