Issued to mark Sir Julius Chan's first term as Prime Minister, this piece was authorized during a period when Papua New Guinea was aggressively using commemorative gold coinage as both a revenue instrument and a diplomatic statement — the country had only achieved independence in 1975. Chan, who had served as Finance Minister before becoming PM, was directly involved in shaping the nation's early monetary policy, making his appearance on a Bank of Papua New Guinea issue something more than ceremonial.
