Papua New Guinea had been independent for only four years when this piece was struck, and the Bank of Papua New Guinea was still actively constructing the symbolic vocabulary of a new sovereign currency. The 100 Kina denomination was reserved almost exclusively for gold commemoratives in this period — coins that circulated in name only and were sold primarily to foreign collectors at a significant premium over face value.
KM#14 is one of several gold issues from 1975–1980 produced under contract at foreign mints, as PNG had no domestic striking facility of its own.
