Yavornyk was one of dozens of Ukrainian commercial enterprises that issued their own surrogate currency during the acute cash shortage of the early 1990s, when the Soviet ruble was collapsing and the Ukrainian karbovanets coupon system could not keep pace with demand. These corporate scrip notes — issued by factories, collective farms, and joint-stock firms alike — were legally tolerated for a brief window before the National Bank of Ukraine moved to suppress non-state emissions.

Printed domestically on whatever stock was available, Yavornyk issues are poorly documented in major catalogs and survive largely by accident.
