| Reversbeschreibung | The reverse presents a richly detailed composition set against both raised and smooth field areas. To the left, a portrait of Galileo Galilei occupies the upper portion, while a stylized medieval miniature depicting celestial observation fills the lower left. To the right, a depiction of a distant galaxy appears in the upper area, with a radio telescope rendered below. In the lower central field, an observatory is depicted against the smooth ground. The arc-shaped Cyrillic legend МІЖНАРОДНИЙ (International) curves above, flanked by РІК (Year), with АСТРОНОМІЇ (of Astronomy) prominently displayed in the center of the composition, wherein the letter O is ingeniously replaced by an image of the planet Saturn with its rings. |

The International Year of Astronomy in 2009 marked the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first use of a telescope for systematic astronomical observation, and UNESCO coordinated commemorative programs across dozens of national mints that year. Ukraine's entry is among the most physically imposing — a kilogram of fine silver at 100mm is at the outer edge of what most sovereign mints attempt for single-coin issues. The National Bank of Ukraine had been producing large-format silver kilo coins since the mid-2000s, and this piece falls within that ambitious collector program rather than any circulating currency context.
