Issued to mark the 1020th anniversary of the baptism of Kievan Rus under Vladimir the Great in 988 AD, this piece belongs to Ukraine's long-running program of large-format commemorative silver. The 988 Christianization was less a spontaneous conversion than a calculated political alignment — Vladimir reportedly sent envoys to observe Muslim, Jewish, Catholic, and Orthodox rites before choosing Constantinople, partly because the Byzantines offered a dynastic marriage to Princess Anna, sister of Emperor Basil II, contingent on the baptism.
The kilo format was used for several issues in this series, struck at the Kyiv mint. Zahreba's specialized catalog for Ukrainian coinage remains the primary reference for distinguishing the various emission quantities within this commemorative program.
