Issued to mark the 1025th anniversary of the Christianization of Kyivan Rus in 988 AD, when Prince Volodymyr the Great ordered the mass baptism of Kyiv's population in the Dnipro River — an event that reshaped the political and ecclesiastical alignment of the entire eastern Slavic world. The anniversary fell at a moment of particular geopolitical sensitivity: 2013 was the year Ukraine's Euromaidan protests began, triggered in part by the Yanukovych government's suspension of EU integration talks.
The 1025th anniversary ceremonies were held jointly in Kyiv, Moscow, and Minsk, with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow presiding alongside Ukrainian officials — a coordination that already carried visible tensions over which modern state held legitimate claim to the Rus inheritance.
