De Javasche Bank was established in Batavia in 1828 by the Dutch colonial government as the central bank for the Netherlands East Indies, and these early copper-backed notes — "kopergeld," meaning copper money — were an attempt to give paper currency some tangible commodity footing in a colony where metallic coinage was chronically scarce and public confidence in paper was fragile at best.
The 1832 issues are among the earliest surviving notes from the bank, and attrition has been severe: tropical humidity, insects, and the general chaos of colonial administration all worked against preservation. Genuine examples at any grade are seldom encountered outside of Dutch institutional collections.
