The "Grietje Seel" nickname — derived from the engraved portrait of a young Dutch woman — became so firmly attached to this series that even bank staff used it informally. De Nederlandsche Bank issued these notes across much of the 1920s, a period when the Netherlands maintained the gold standard longer than most European neighbors, giving the guilder unusual stability at a time when continental currencies were collapsing.
Enschedé printed the series, as was standard for Dutch state issues of this period. The paper quality and watermark construction were considered among the more sophisticated in European circulation at the time — counterfeiting attempts were documented but none achieved meaningful distribution.
