| 背面描述 | The reverse features a dynamic commemorative scene depicting a hand firmly grasping a flagpole from which the national flag of Suriname flies boldly to the right, rendered in high relief against a background of a rising sun with radiating rays breaking over a landscape. The design symbolises the dawn of independence. The legend EEN JAAR ONAFHANKELIJKHEID arcs around the upper periphery, and the commemorative date inscription 1975 - 25 NOVEMBER - 1976 runs along the lower rim, marking the first anniversary of Surinamese independence. |

Suriname gained independence from the Netherlands on 25 November 1975, making this issue a first-anniversary commemoration struck just twelve months later. The transition was notably fraught — approximately 40% of Suriname's population emigrated to the Netherlands in the years immediately surrounding independence, hollowing out the professional class and straining the young nation's institutions almost from the outset.
KM#18a is the gold variant of a multi-metal commemorative program. The .900 fineness follows the same standard the Dutch had long applied to their own gold coinage.
