Suriname gained independence from the Netherlands on 25 November 1975, making this 1976 issue a first-anniversary commemoration struck within months of the new state's founding. The Centrale Bank van Suriname had itself only just been reconstituted as a fully sovereign institution, having previously operated under Dutch financial oversight as the Surinaamsche Bank.
The "Red Gold" designation distinguishes this from companion issues in the same series struck in yellow gold, with the copper alloy ratio adjusted to produce the warmer hue — a deliberate choice for the commemorative set rather than a production accident.
