The Javasche Bank — formally De Javasche Bank, chartered in 1828 — operated as the central bank of the Dutch East Indies and held that role until nationalization in 1951. By 1908, the bank was issuing notes into a colonial economy increasingly reliant on plantation export revenue from tobacco, rubber, and sugar, with the 100 Gulden denomination moving primarily through commercial rather than retail channels.
Pick 62c belongs to a long-running series with several signature and date varieties; distinguishing them requires close attention to the signing officials, as the printed design changed little across issues. Cotton substrate was standard for the series, but surviving examples in collectible condition are genuinely uncommon — the tropical climate of Java was not kind to paper currency.
