The K.u.K. Staats-Central-Casse was the imperial state treasury of the Habsburg monarchy, not a central bank in the modern sense — these notes were direct state obligations, issued to cover fiscal shortfalls rather than through any banking mechanism. The 1850 series came during the financial strain following the revolutions of 1848–49, when the empire had spent heavily suppressing uprisings in Hungary, Italy, and Bohemia.
Cotton substrate on notes of this period is notoriously susceptible to fold fatigue along vertical crease lines, and the 1850 Gulden issues are frequently encountered with separation beginning at those points.
