The k.k. Staats-Central-Cassa — the Imperial-Royal State Central Cashier's Office — issued this note during one of the most turbulent years in Habsburg history. The revolutions of 1848 had strained imperial finances severely, and paper emissions of 1849 were a direct consequence of the military expenditure required to suppress uprisings in Hungary, Vienna, and northern Italy simultaneously. The Staatsschuldenkasse issues of this period were not backed by any meaningful specie reserve.
Notes from this emission are prone to fold splits at the intersections — the paper stock used in Vienna during this period was notably brittle, and genuine circulation examples show it.
