Anthony Nesty's 1988 Seoul victory in the 100m butterfly — by one one-hundredth of a second over Matt Biondi — was the first Olympic gold medal ever won by Suriname, and by any Black swimmer in Olympic history. The margin was so impossibly small that the timing system's precision became a talking point in competitive swimming for years afterward.
