Anthony Nesty's 1988 Seoul Olympic victory in the 100m butterfly was the first Olympic gold medal ever won by Suriname — and by any swimmer representing an African nation. He beat Matt Biondi by one-hundredth of a second, a margin so thin it required photo-finish review. Suriname issued commemorative silver in his honor across multiple denominations and variants, with this .999 fine piece among the higher-purity strikes in that program.
