Greece's first paper money, issued under the Provisional Administration at Corinth while the War of Independence was still actively being fought. The necessity was acute: the nascent state had no functioning treasury, no established coinage infrastructure, and pressing military expenditures that could not wait for either.
Acceptance was poor. A population with no tradition of paper currency and justified doubts about the government's survival treated the notes with suspicion. Redemption never followed in any meaningful way, and the issue collapsed practically before it had circulated.
Pick 1 is among the earliest documented paper issues of any modern Greek governing authority.
