Haiti's 1971 gold commemorative series was issued under Jean-Claude Duvalier, who had assumed the presidency just months earlier following his father's death. The series depicted figures from world history — a peculiar choice for a cash-strapped Caribbean government, but one clearly aimed at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation. These were never intended to trade as currency.
