Billy Bowlegs — or Holata Micco — led the final significant Seminole resistance in Florida during the Third Seminole War, which ended in 1858 when he and roughly 160 remaining fighters accepted removal to Indian Territory rather than face further attrition. Haiti's 1971 commemorative gold series was a foreign exchange vehicle as much as anything else, issued under the Duvalier government to capture hard currency from foreign collectors who would never spend the coins domestically.
The choice to honor figures from American frontier conflicts was deliberate marketing toward the U.S. collector market, not any particular historical affinity between Haiti and the Seminole nation.
