The P258 series was printed before the September 1991 military coup that overthrew Jean-Bertrand Aristide and triggered three years of international sanctions against Haiti. Notes from this period circulated under severe economic strain — the embargo that followed the coup caused acute cash shortages, meaning existing stock was used hard and often not replaced. Giesecke & Devrient had supplied Haitian currency for several series by this point, with production handled at their Munich facilities rather than Leipzig, which served primarily as the firm's historical and administrative base.
