Bahrain's 100 Gems series commemorates the country's historical pearling industry, once the economic backbone of the Gulf before oil. The June birthstone entry in the series continues the Bahraini Central Bank's ongoing program of thematic polymer collector issues, each tied to a gemstone of the calendar month. Bahrain's connection to pearling is genuine — before the 1930s collapse of the natural pearl market driven by Japanese cultured pearls, the trade dominated the economy and defined the social structure of the archipelago.
