Appenzell-Innerrhodische Kantonalbank was one of the smallest cantonal issuers in Switzerland, serving a half-canton with a population that barely exceeded 12,000 at the time. The decision to issue notes at all — let alone at the 100 Franc denomination — reflected the legal framework of the 1881 Swiss Bank Note Act, which permitted cantonal banks to issue currency under federal license before the Nationalbank monopoly ended that era in 1910, the last year of this series.

The trilingual denomination inscription was a federal requirement, not a nod to local usage — Appenzell Innerrhoden is entirely German-speaking.
