The "type 1862" designation is something of a misnomer in collectors' parlance — the design was approved and first issued in 1862, but this black-index variant wasn't put into circulation until 1866, after the Banque de France introduced a new accounting classification system that required index letters printed in black rather than the earlier red. The distinction matters: red-index and black-index notes of the same design are catalogued separately precisely because the transition marks an administrative reorganization, not a redesign.
Pannemaker's engraving work on the obverse is exceptional even within this period's high standard of French intaglio printing. He was primarily known for wood engraving but produced some of his finest steel work for the Banque de France during the 1860s. The series ran until 1882, a notably long production life that resulted in multiple hand-signed varieties across the full issue span.
